Last year, the stylish and powerful BMW 4-Series arrived on our lot here in Urbandale, IA, and our local drivers can't seem to get enough. Now, we've getting word that the lineup will be getting a new family member: the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

If you're not familiar with the barrage of luxury body styles, "Gran Coupe" effectively means a coupe with four doors instead of two. Now that you know--or if you knew already--you might be a bit confused.

"Wait, isn't the 4-Series basically a 3-Series with two doors?" you might ask. Yes, and no. When the 4-Series Gran Coupe hits showrooms for the 2015 model year, it will be half an inch longer and wider than its 3-Series sibling, and sit lower to the ground like the coupe.

There are also some similarities. On the underpinning front, the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four will be returning, alongside the more potent 3.0-liter turbo-six. Power from both will routed to the rear wheels by way of an 8-speed automatic transmission.

To our minds, the 4-Series Gran Coupe will appeal to local drivers who are interested in a sportier driving experience with their vehicles. While pricing has yet to be announced, we imagine it will come out a little higher than the 3-Series when it's launched this summer.

Is there a new BMW model on your mind this winter? Now's the time to drive it. Drop by BMW of Des Moines and we'll get you set up with a test drive!
